Main Control Message: Keeping you in the Loop
Top l-r: Ken Regan, Terry Kostek, Joan Paton, Sharon Marcus Bottom l-r: Brian Dunsmore, Katrina Regan-Ingram, Kris Rodts, Todd Crawshaw
The management team (check out the jerseys!) is launching a new blog, called 'Main Control Message', that will be updated every 2 weeks. We want to keep you in the loop of all things CKUA from the perspective of the folks who are the stewards of the station.
We'll share with you what decisions are being made, and why. We'll update you with the progress of our new building, and how plans for the Big Move are progressing. We'll give you financial updates. We'll talk about broadcasting and music industry insights, advances and trends. And we'll explore CKUA's role within Alberta's Arts and Cultural communities, along with sneak peeks into what we're planning...
We'd be delighted if you would join us in this 'conversation'. We want to make sure we're answering your questions and satisfying your curiosity - please visit our Main Control Message, and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

CKUA couldn’t be happier to be presenting the extremely talented and eccentric Caity Fisher as part of our TransCanada’s Alberta Backstage Series. So join us on Friday, February 3rd at 8pm from the historic Bailey Theatre in Camrose. Admission is free! If you can’t join us in person, make sure to tune in.
Volunteer Corner
 Poster in the CKUA Lunchroom
Did you know that over the last 12 months, CKUA volunteers have represented us at over 200 performances in our beautiful province? Many of these events are in and around Edmonton, where some 50 volunteers make their way, with 'bunk' and banner, to set up a display, tell people about the mighty CKUA and hand out 'swag' at places including the Winspear Centre for Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and concerts, Shell Theatre in Fort Saskatchewan, Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove, Festival Place in Sherwood Park, the Arden in St. Albert, Mcdougall United Church, Northern Lights Theatre, the Stanley Milner Library, Old Strathcona Farmer's Market, Timms Centre for the Arts ... as well as community street fairs, folk festivals, Symphony under the Sky: it just goes on and on!
Another 30 or so volunteers do the same all around the province - at musical events, folk and film festivals near and far - in Red Deer, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Canmore, Fort MacLeod, Banff, Slave Lake, Athabasca and Lethbridge. The TransCanada Alberta Backstage series has helped us enlist new volunteers in new places - and our hope for 2012 year is to make these volunteer connections even stronger. One way we plan to do that is through the website - stay tuned ...

Lurking in the Library
The end of January can be depressing; with the cold, grey days that fade into a cold black night at 4:30pm, credit card bills, and the distinct lack of holiday cheer that December had. While you’re back to the grind after the holidays, don’t think how far away summer is. Just pretend! Pop some vitamin D, throw on some summer music, and just don’t look out the window. Summer will be here in no time! Here’s some music that will make you almost forget that it’s miserable outside.
Island 40 Volume 1 1959-1964: Ska's The Limit – Various Artists Including songs by Millie Small, Jimmy Cliff, Laurel Aitken, Derrick Morgan and many more… Here’s some First Wave ska that is guaranteed to put a boogie in your bones.
The Sound Of Sunshine – Michael Franti Literally.
Rise Again - Lee “Scratch” Perry A new release from an old master, this was a member of the exclusive CKUA Hot Box, and has received rave reviews.
Time Tough: The Anthology - Toots & The Maytals Throw on Broadway Jungle and you’ll be squawking along before you realize it. Plus one of the best covers of ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ ever done (in my opinion). This is a fantastic collection, whether you agree with the aforementioned statement or otherwise.
